Shaving Head

Pilgrims must not shave their heads or any hair on their body. They are not allowed to pluck or remove hair of anyone else, whether he is in ihram or not. The cutting and trimming the nails is also prohibited. This is interpreted by the scholars from the following verse 196 of Surah Al-Baqarah:

“And don’t shave your heads, unless the sacrifice reaches its destination.”

This expiation for this action is a handful of grain to needy or poor.

Using Perfume

Using perfume or applying it on the clothes in not allowed for pilgrims. The perfumes such as amber, cardamom, cloves, camphor and saffron all are forbidden. Even the fragrance of food is also forbidden in ihram. Even if the muhrim is deceased, he must not be applied to any kind of perfume. This has been deduced by the scholars from the following incident.

The Prophet PBUH said regarding a man who got deceased by getting trampled by his camel, “Wash him with water lotus leaves and shroud him in his ahram, and don’t cover his head or perfume with hanoot.”

Hanoot is a mixture of different fragrances that is usually applied on the deceased. The expiation of this action is one sheep.
